Study on the Effects of Dansambohyultang and Bowhatang on Gastric Ulcer in Rats

Abstract
In order to investigate the effects of Dansambohyultang and Bowhatang on gastric ulcer, gastric juice, gastric acidity and pepsin out-put in the pylorus-ligated rats were determined and gastric ulcers induced by ethanol, indomethacin, stress and acetic acid were studied respectively.
The effects of the dried extracts of the prescriptions were also compared with the mixture of individual dried extract.
The following results have been obtained:
1) The dried extracts of each Dansambohyultang and Bowhatang showed a good inhibitory effects on the secretion of gastric juice in rats, whereas the mixture of individual dried extract did not reveal any of the inhibition.
¢¥2) Dansambohyultang and Bowhatang produced marked inhibitory effects on the gastric acidity in the pylorus-ligated rats. Especially the dried extract of Dansambohyultang showed the most inhibitory effect among them.
3) Both Dansambohyltang and Bowhatang produced an effective inhibiting on the pepsin secretion and an anti-gastric ulcer action on the indomethacin-induced gastric ulcer in rats, Bowhatang showed a better effect than that of Dansambohyltang.
4) A remarkable anti-gastric ulcer action on the gastric ulcers induced by ethanol or stress in rats were found in both prescription. Dansambohyultang was more
effective than that of Bowhatang.
5) A significant effect on the acetic acid-induced gastric ulcer in rats was shown with consistency during 5 to 10 days after administration of the dried extract Dansambohyultang. Other groups also showed gradual improvement with similarity at 15 days after the administration of the extracts.
6) The dried extracts of each prescription produced better effect on the gastric ulcers than that of the effects by the mixture of individual dried extract.
According to above results, it is concluded that both Dansambohyultang and Bowhatang were recognized to be effective on the gastric ulcer in rats, and this study may suggest a direction to apply both the prescriptions for the treatment of gastric ulcer in practice.
